Managing Christmas Emotions

Christmas time normally brings up many emotions but this year may actually be even more intense with the addition of CoVid. So how do we navigate? First be in awareness of what is surfacing for you, surfacing for those loved ones around you. To give you an idea of the types of emotions that may surface, have a look below:

  • Sadness, feeling like "blue" more often than not

  • Distracted, feeling like you cannot focus on any one thing

  • Stress, constant feeling of pressure of doing

  • Sense of loss, not being able to be with loved ones

We know that Christmas brings so many unwanted emotions because of the demands of the holidays, from shopping for gifts to any entertaining you may be doing. This year it is time to break that cycle and there are so many ways you can accomplish this...yes there is....first a decision to want to and then a change of mindset. So let's get started!

Here are some ways/ tips you can use or adopt so that you can truly enjoy your holidays.

  1. Awareness - That is the first step in making a change. When we are in awareness then acceptance takes place. Awareness of what emotions are surfacing.

  2. Reach out and talk about it - Talk, share with someone how you feel. Whether it is a friend, or a therapist, or a coach, just reach out and talk about it.

  3. Realistic - Be realistic in your goals for the season. There is no need to do more than you have to and be completely stretched. Set your manageable goals for each day and if not all are achieved, that is okay, there is always tomorrow.

  4. Keep up your healthy habits - exercise, meditation, self-care, healthy eating...do not stop just because it is the holiday time. If you haven't started, think about adding in at least one thing that will make you feel calm or energized.

  5. NO - this is a BIG one. Learn to say NO, no to what is not resonating with you. Feeling obligated at this time of year is huge, learn to say no. Remember when you say NO to them, you are saying YES to you.

  6. Time out - put yourself in "time out" periodically so that you can regroup, reenergize, and enjoy the season for what it represents. Find the time for relaxation, whatever that it is for you, reading a book, watching TV, or getting with nature. Add in some fun while you are at it, it is okay to have fun.

  7. Plan - plan ahead for all that you have to do. That includes putting self-care on that list as well. You know the saying....when you fail to plan, you plan to fail!

  8. Acceptance - Practice acceptance for all those around you, family, friends, especially this year with CoVid and restrictions. Tensions can and may run high, practicing acceptance will diffuse all tensions.

Don't let dread take you this holiday season. Instead, take the steps you need to prevent the stress, anxiety, and depression that can prevail during the holidays. Be in awareness so you recognize your holiday triggers, such as financial pressures or personal demands, so you can head them off before they lead you to a possible meltdown. We all know that with a little planning, practicing Mindfulness, and of course positive thinking, you can find all peace and joy during the holidays.

How do you want to show up this holiday season?

I would love to hear from you!

Love & Blessings Always,
